What a video intercom does for your villa or building

A video intercom lets you see and speak to whoever is at your gate or door before you let them in. A camera and call button sit at the entrance, a screen sits inside, and a relay opens the door or gate when you press a button. Modern systems also send the call to your phone, so you can answer a courier or let in a guest when you are not at home.

For villas, the intercom usually covers the main gate, the front door and sometimes a service or garage entrance. For residential buildings and compounds, it connects a lobby panel to every apartment, often with a security desk in between. The right design depends on the property, the cabling already in place and how you want to manage visitors.

2-wire vs IP video intercom: which should you choose?

The two main technologies differ in how they carry power, audio and video between the door and the monitors.

  • 2-wire systems carry power, audio and video over a single pair of wires. They are ideal for upgrades, because you can often reuse the cable from an old audio intercom without opening walls. Installation is simple and reliable. Features and integration options are more limited, and app access usually needs an extra gateway.
  • IP systems run on your network, usually over Cat6 cable with Power over Ethernet. They offer higher video quality, native mobile apps, easy expansion, integration with CCTV and access control, and central management. They need a properly designed network, which makes them the natural choice for new villas, new buildings and full renovations.

If you are building or fully renovating, plan IP intercom alongside the rest of your smart home and network cabling. If you are replacing an older system in a finished property, a 2-wire upgrade can give you video and modern monitors with far less disruption.

Choosing the right outdoor station

The outdoor station faces UAE sun, heat, dust and occasional rain, so build quality matters as much as features. Check the following:

  • Weather and impact protection: look for a suitable IP rating such as IP65 for dust and water, and an IK rating for impact resistance on exposed gates.
  • Camera: a wide-angle lens to see people standing to one side, wide dynamic range for harsh backlight, and infrared or white light for clear night images.
  • Entry options: a keypad code, card or tag reader, or face recognition so family members and staff can enter without calling.
  • Mounting: surface or flush mounting at a comfortable height, with a rain hood or sun shield where the panel faces direct sunlight.

Indoor monitors and the mobile app

Indoor monitors range from simple screens to larger touch panels with Wi-Fi. Place them where you actually spend time, such as the kitchen, the main living area and the master bedroom, and consider a monitor at the driver or maid room if staff handle deliveries. Most systems let monitors call each other, which works as an internal intercom in larger villas.

The mobile app forwards door calls to your phone with live video and two-way audio, and lets you release the door or gate remotely. Before you rely on it, check that the app is maintained by the manufacturer, supports multiple family members, and lets you remove a user easily. Set strong passwords and keep firmware updated, because the intercom is a connected device at your front door.

Connecting the intercom to locks, gates, access control and CCTV

An intercom is most useful when it can actually open something. The outdoor station or a separate relay module can drive:

  • Electric strikes or electronic locks on pedestrian doors and gates.
  • Magnetic locks on glass doors, with a fail-safe design on escape routes.
  • Sliding or swing gate motors and car park barriers.
  • Smart locks on the front door, where the brands are compatible.

IP intercoms can also show your CCTV cameras on the indoor monitor, so you can check the driveway or garden from the same screen. In buildings, the intercom can work with the access control system so residents use one card or tag for the lobby, lifts and car park. You can read more about credentials and permissions in our access control guide.

Intercom systems for apartment buildings and compounds

Multi-apartment systems add a few requirements that villas do not have:

  • Lobby panel: a digital directory or keypad so visitors can find and call the right apartment, ideally showing apartment numbers rather than resident names.
  • Guard station: calls can route to a security desk first, so the guard screens visitors and deliveries before connecting them to the resident.
  • Multiple entrances: main lobby, car park, side gates and service entrances can all connect to the same system.
  • Lift integration: visitors can be given access only to the floor of the apartment they are visiting.
  • Management software: building management can add or remove residents, send notices and review call logs centrally.

For compounds with many villas, an IP system over fibre and network switches can link each villa, the main gate and the security office into one platform.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my old intercom wiring?

Often, yes. Many 2-wire video systems are designed to run on existing two-core cable from older audio intercoms. A site survey confirms whether the cable is in good enough condition and within the system's distance limits.

Will the door still open if the internet is down?

Yes. The outdoor station and indoor monitors work on the local system, so calling and opening the door from the monitor continue as normal. Only remote answering through the mobile app depends on an internet connection.

Can tenants or family members each have their own app access?

Most current IP systems support several app users per villa or apartment, each with their own login, so access can be added or removed without affecting others.

A well-planned video intercom system makes every arrival at your door easier to manage, whether you are at home or away.
